Celebrating the A to Z Blogging Challenge with quotations on the writing life.
Give yourself unto reading.
A man who never reads will never be read;
he who never quotes will never be quoted.
He who will not use the thoughts of other men’s brains,
proves that he has no brains of his own.
You need to read.
Charles H. Spurgeon
What can I add to Spurgeon’s eloquence? Not a thing! Except, perhaps, these insightful words from our friend Chesterton.
There is a great deal of difference between an eager man who wants to read a book and a tired man who wants a book to read.
G.K. Chesterton
Will you “give yourself unto reading,” friend? Instead of (like me) sitting around eating taco chips and watching junk television?
What a great quote by Spurgeon, and how true this is! Thanks for sharing this today!

John Mark, the quote is from Spurgeon’s sermon, Paul–His Cloak and His Books, given November 29, 1863.

Thanks for the reference… I’ll have to save this one for future use!

I agree, the Spurgeon quote is excellent. One of the best parts about being writer is the excuse to read so much–it’s my job, I have to :)!

I know, Sarah, right? I’m glad to know that you were encouraged by it.

Great quotes! I just got back from the library with my kids … we packed in a stack of books. Yay for reading!

Reading helps on so many levels that it’s worth the occasional library fine. Our library emails “almost due” reminders, for which I am thankful.
I have discovered audio books at the library. Unless they’re popular children’s / young adult titles (with skuffs and scratches), they enrich our car trips. Scratches and skips in the CD bring howls of frustration…

Can’t argue with those quotes.

Love the quotes and yes, I give myself unto reading daily. So grateful I grew up in a country which lacked the mind candy of excessive TV. Love the picture of the kids in the tree.

There are mind candy books. 🙂 I think I’m one of those writing them…

Wonderful. I prefer reading to almost any other activity. Music might be a close challenger. After dinner, I think I shall dig into the pile that has been growing steadily on the floor next to my bed.

I began my collection of quotations not to share with students, but as reminders to myself. Advice from people who have been there is priceless.

Yes, I agree with using them for myself too. I think we are so much more open when we hear what others have to say and hold it up against what we think or have been taught. Do we have something to learn? We have to at least have something to compare our thoughts too, or else we’ll be walking around stuck in our own vortex!
Thanks for the post, Laura.
